Food safety and food hygiene ratings are never far from the news.
Sharing local establishments’ food hygiene ratings is a popular topic of engagement on many social media channels and in local newspapers, and unfortunately, it’s often those scoring at the lower end of the scale that make headlines.
Effective food safety and hygiene training isn’t just for businesses with a kitchen, it applies equally to businesses selling pre-packaged food and can help protect your business and ensure you avoid unwanted publicity.
Ensure your staff understand their role in maintaining food safety with a course written by one of the world’s leading food safety experts, Richard Sprenger, and accredited by the UK’s leading organisation for regulated food safety qualifications.
This online food safety and hygiene training course is ideal for those who work with pre-packaged foods or in low-risk catering environments.
Course Overview
Food businesses must, by law, ensure that all staff have received the appropriate level of safety and hygiene training commensurate with their role and risk.
It is a useful induction programme for those undertaking work-experience in a food business, and for anyone with a keen interest in learning more about the basic principles of food safety and hygiene.
This online course is suitable for those working in a catering environment who are not directly involved in the preparation or handling of high-risk foods, but work in an environment where food is handled elsewhere or only deal with low-risk foods. It is also ideal for those working with pre-packaged or wrapped food.

Is this training course right for me?
If you work in a low-risk catering environment or are simply looking to expand your knowledge as a hobbyist, this course is ideal for you.
However, if you are involved, or are going to be involved in the direct preparation of food within a business environment, you must be trained to a higher level.
Highfield’s Food Safety Level 2 e-learning course is ideal for most food handlers working in a catering or retail environment. If you work in a food manufacturing environment, the Food Safety in Manufacturing Level 2 course is perfect for you.
Supervisors and managers must be trained to a higher level again, and the Food Safety Level 3 e-learning course is designed for this level of employee. It is also useful for owners of small catering businesses.
This e-learning course is CPD accredited. Completion of this course after 5 February 2019 entitles the learner to 5 CPD points. More information can be found at https://cpduk.co.uk/explained
Course duration
The course will typically take 2 to 3 hours to complete, however as this food safety training is hosted online, learners can complete each module at a time and pace to suit them.
Our LMS provides comprehensive reports, including progress reports, so that trainers or managers can ensure the course is completed to suit training or business needs.
Entry requirements
There are no prerequisites to study this course, though a basic understanding of principles of food safety will be beneficial.
Test and certification
The course is assessed by multiple-choice questions at the end of the course. Learners must score 100% in order to pass.
If the learner does not achieve 100% first time, they will be taken back to review the module with which they have struggled. They can then retry the multiple-choice questions as many times as necessary to pass the course.
Please note: this course does not provide a qualification itself but does meet mandatory training requirements. If you wish to achieve a recognised level 1 food safety qualification you must sit an exam with a recognised training provider (you can still use the e-learning as the knowledge element of the training). Find a training provider here.
You will receive an electronic copy of your certificate immediately on completion of the course. This certificate, which is the equivalent of the old basic food hygiene certificate, may be printed and used as evidence that you have been trained in food hygiene to the appropriate level.
Accessibility
This course features a full audio voiceover, a glossary of terms and a transcript for users that are hard of hearing.
