What Is the Emergency First Aid at Work Course?

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF), Qualification Number 610/0759/6. Therefore, it is a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification that meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for workplace emergency first aiders.

Furthermore, this qualification is mandatory for anyone applying for an SIA Door Supervisor licence, making it an essential course for anyone entering the security industry.

What Does the Course Cover?

The EFAW course consists of one mandatory unit:

Unit 1 — Emergency First Aid in the Workplace

This unit covers the knowledge and practical skills needed to deal with a range of workplace first aid emergencies. As a result, you will be able to respond quickly and effectively in a real emergency situation.

The unit covers the following topics:

  • Role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • How to assess an emergency situation safely
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • How to place a casualty in the recovery position
  • First aid for a casualty who is choking
  • First aid for external bleeding and hypovolaemic shock
  • First aid for minor injuries including cuts, grazes, burns and nosebleeds

Furthermore, the course includes both practical and theoretical assessment, ensuring you are fully competent in all areas covered.

How Is the Course Assessed?

The EFAW qualification is assessed by two methods:

Practical Assessment:

Throughout the course, your trainer will assess your practical first aid skills using Highfield’s official assessment matrix. Therefore, you must demonstrate competence in all required practical skills to pass.

Multiple Choice Theory Assessment:

Additionally, you will complete a 15-question multiple choice theory paper. In order to pass, you must achieve at least 70% — that is 11 out of 15 correct answers. A minimum of 25 minutes is provided to complete the theory assessment.

How Long Does the Course Take?

The EFAW course is a one day course with a minimum of 6 contact hours, excluding breaks. Furthermore, the course can also be delivered over a maximum of a 4-week period, with each training session lasting a minimum of 2 hours — offering flexibility for learners with busy schedules.

If blended learning is used, at least two-thirds of the training time (4 hours) must be delivered face-to-face. Additionally, all practical assessments must be completed face-to-face.
